Summer Workshop on Causal Inference
June 10-13, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Attendees: Graduate Research Assistant Sueny Paloma Lima Dos Santos
Overview: Themed Causal Inference from Observational Data and organized by the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), this workshop aimed to introduce foundational concepts and methods for causal inference from observational data, enabling participants to become competent consumers of causal inference literature. The workshop aimed to equip attendees with practical skills and knowledge to apply these methods in various fields.
Main takeaways and highlights: Through this summer workshop, Lima Dos Santos comprehensively learned foundational concepts and methods for causal inference from observational data. The workshop covered various topics, including the g-formula, inverse probability weighting of marginal structural models, causal mediation analysis, trial emulation, methods to handle unmeasured confounding via instrumental variables, difference-in-differences techniques and proxy-based methods. Learning how these techniques can be applied to maternal and child health was especially beneficial. A personal highlight was networking with leading experts in the field and discussing potential collaborations.
