Funded Program

Building on Blue Spruce Neighbors, a program designed to serve seniors by delivering boxes of healthful food and opening pop-up pantries, Community Food Share ran a pilot program where they drove participants in a senior living community with high food needs to a food pantry two miles away.

Community Food Share evaluated three food distribution methods for low-income seniors: a pilot program bussing seniors to a nearby pantry, delivering food boxes, and operating in-building pop-up pantries. The goal was to identify strategies to improve food security and access among senior populations.

The evaluation aimed to assess the differences in food security, nutrition security, and overall satisfaction among seniors participating in three food distribution methods: bussing to a central pantry, receiving delivery food boxes or using in-building pop-up pantries.

Participants in the program received free food deliveries or shopping experiences as well as $25 incentives for completing surveys. When surveying participants, Community Food Share utilized a combination of validated and in-house measures. Food security was assessed using the USDA Food Security Screener, while nutrition security was measured through the Household Nutrition Security Measure, a validated tool developed by The Center for Nutrition & Health Impact.
