August 9–12, New Orleans, Louisiana

Attendee: Adjunct Research Scientist Dr. Sarah Stotz

Overview: The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists annual conference focuses on diabetes care, education and technology that can elevate diabetes educator and care specialists’ approach to supporting people with‒or at risk for‒diabetes. At the 2024 conference, Dr. Stotz joined leadership from Market Umbrella, a Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) produce prescription (PPR) grantee. This award is augmented by CNHI Principal Scientist, Dr. Carmen Byker Shanks’s American Diabetes Association award.

Presentation:

  • Enhancing Diabetes Education with a Produce Prescription: A Multi-Sector Partnership in New Orleans

  • Dr. Stotz presented and colleagues presented on Pathway for Produce Prescriptions in Diabetes Management (PPPT2D), a program with support from the American Diabetes Association that seeks to evaluate the impact of GusNIP PPR project participants diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, establish the cost-effectiveness of PPR projects through a program cost analysis, and examine reach, dose and fidelity of PPR projects to determine feasibility and best practices.

Main takeaways and highlights: From each of the five regions, a control group of participants are also enrolled. This allows PPPT2D to compare the intervention’s impacts on participants receiving the intervention versus control group participants receiving standard of care (i.e., not receiving PPRs).

Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected to understand if participants receiving PPRs experience improvements in HbA1c, fruit and vegetable intake, food security and BMI, compared to participants receiving standard of care (e.g., the control group).
